Suiti family names

Surnames to the members of the Suiti community were given at the same time, as surnames were given to farmers in the whole of Courland. This was done in accordance with the patent of October 29, 1834 and the patent of March 6, 1835 of the Civil Governor of Courland Governorate, Brewern, regarding the compilation of population lists. The 1834 patent contained six points that determined the procedure for choosing surnames and organizing work.

The need for surnames arose because, as society developed, it became necessary to more accurately identify peasants as well. The previously existing system, according to which peasants were identified by name and house name, was no longer sufficient as the freedom of movement of peasants had gradually increased.

Surnames to the Suiti were given in 1835, and the use of surnames in church register books started on January 1, 1836. At that time, every person was legally given the right to choose his or her own surname. It was recommended to choose only decent and good-sounding surnames. It was forbidden to choose surnames of noble families. Surnames that someone had already chosen could no longer be accepted.

The decision about the surname had to be made by the oldest man in the family – the grandfather. He chose a surname for himself, and this choice had to be accepted by his children and children’s children. Even if they had established independent families. If the grandfather had died, the father could choose the surname for himself and the children, but in this case the surname on the side line, that is, his brothers and sisters, did not apply. Brothers, whose father had died, could each choose completely different surnames.

Surnames were given by the municipal parish courts. If the chosen surname met the rules, it was entered in the list of surnames and recorded in the court register. Unfortunately, these protocols have not been later preserved.

As can be seen below, most of the surnames chosen in the Suiti community where either of Latvian or Polish origin. Although there is no shortage of surnames of German and even Swedish origin. Farmstead owners often derived their surname from the name of the farm. In the first years after the assignment of surnames, a relatively free approach to the spelling of these surnames can be observed in the church register books. Often the same person’s last name was spelled differently on different occasions, even with very different pronunciations and surname endings.

As the only source for recording early surnames today is the church register books, the list below has been made based on the birth (baptism) registers of the Alšvanga (today Alsunga) parish for the period from 1836 to 1847, as well as looking through some sections of the death registers. If no one was born in a family during the mentioned period, then such surname would have not be included in this list. Since population migration was negligible at the time, it can be argued that the accuracy of the list still is relatively high.

The versions in parentheses show the original spelling of the surnames in the register books. It may happen that different spellings of the same surname may appear in this list as different surnames and vice versa. It would take serious genealogical research to sort this out. Under the letters S and Š there are many surnames that start with both letters in the register entries. Perhaps it has something to do with the frequent use of the letter Š instead of today’s S in the oldest Suiti language.
